Parenting is one of life’s greatest joys—and greatest challenges. When you’re raising children with a partner, those challenges can multiply. You’re not just guiding a child; you’re also navigating each other’s parenting approach, stress levels, and emotional triggers.
Over the past 30+ years, I’ve helped hundreds of couples move from conflict to connection. If you’re feeling out of sync as a parenting team, here are six powerful shifts that can help you grow together, support your children more effectively, and bring greater peace to your home.
1. From Disconnection to Partnership
It’s normal for couples to have a different parenting approach. The problem is that unresolved disagreements can cause resentment and confusion. When you begin working together as allies—not adversaries—you create a secure foundation for your children and for each other.
“Your partnership is the foundation. Your children are the extras built on that base.”
2. From Conflict to Clarity: The 3 Parenting Roles
One of the most impactful tools I teach couples is recognizing who the problem belongs to and which role to take:
- Director – You set the limit
- Collaborator – You and your child solve it together
- Supporter – You clearly state you will support, not give advice, so you can encourage their growth
This simple framework helps couples approach parenting as a united team. When children see this united front, they stop pitting parents against each other and instead work more cooperatively in the family.
3. From Reactive Moments to Proactive Planning
When one parent reacts emotionally and the other jumps in to “rescue” the child, everyone loses. I guide couples to step back, reflect on what’s really going on, and co-create thoughtful plans that bring more calm and clarity.
“We’ve started supporting each other instead of criticizing. We have more calm, more clarity, and less conflict.”
4. From Emotional Reactivity to Connection
Understanding the immaturity of your child’s developing brain can help you transform how you respond in tough moments. Instead of expecting “mature” child behavior, calm your own reaction first. You strengthen connection in the family when you model emotional maturity.
“Your calmness will settle your child much faster than yelling.”
5. From Stuck Stories to Empowered Action
Common thoughts like “I’ve already tried everything” or “Things aren’t that bad” can keep you from reaching out for helpful advice. But the cost of staying stuck is high for your family now and in the future.
“Awareness is the first step to change.”
6. From Shame to Strength: Asking for Help Is Brave
You’re not a bad parent if you ask for support—you’re a brave one. Whether you prefer DIY learning or private coaching, the key is taking that first step forward. And if your partner is hesitant, it helps to know:
🟢Educators and therapists have different roles with parents. As an educator, my role is to help you understand why your current approach isn’t working and give you advice on what to try instead.
“You are a good parent. And you don’t have to figure it all out alone.”
