Do you ever experience getting angry, frustrated, and possibly losing it with your kids?
You are a rare parent if you replied, “No.”
The question to ask yourself is, “Why am I getting triggered and other parents are, too?”
There are 3 main reasons why parents get triggered by their children.
1. You have Inflexible thoughts
Inflexible thoughts, such as “my child is so impossible, irresponsible, and selfish,” create a negative view of your child. Your child becomes the problem, and they don’t care about you and your needs. They also don’t respect your authority, which really steams up parents.
Trying to change your children DIRECTLY doesn’t work because you cannot control another person.
The solution: Stop your inflexible thoughts and embrace flexible thoughts instead.
You will learn all the details of how to make this shift and what to think instead in Module 3 of Win, Win, Win, Parenting.
2. You are directing too much
I was teaching a class recently where I was talking about how to be a supporter when your children are struggling so they can solve their personal challenges. Afterwards, a mom came up to me and said, “I thought we were supposed to always tell our children what to do.”
This is a misconception that creates children who become angry and rebellious with you because you are always telling them what to do. They also develop low self-esteem and can become overly anxious teens and adults who are unable to solve their problems.
The solution: Learn how to balance your relationship with your children by becoming a Collaborator and Supporter, too.
You will learn how to balance the 3 parenting roles in Module 2 of Win, Win, Win, Parenting.

3. You are giving poor directions
The traditional approach to parenting is based on controlling children with punishment strategies that creates fearful children. They may comply for a while, but eventually, resentment builds up and rebellion or revenge develops. The disciplined approach gives directions clearly and respectfully without shaming children or arguing with them. You feel good about the language you are using, and your children remain connected to you and are more likely to cooperate.
The solution: Learn how to give directions effectively and respectfully so your children cooperate with you. And your relationship stays healthy.
You will learn how to give these effective directions in Module 5 of Win, Win, Win Parenting.
From Getting Triggered to Staying Calm and Connected
As you can see, you can change from getting triggered to:
- thinking of your children respectfully and
- responding without shaming so you
- maintaining a good relationship and
- children cooperating much more often than they are now.
