Creating a More Peaceful Home
You are so precious to me. You are opening your minds and taking steps to create a more peaceful world.
Each time you self-reflect and stop yourself from venting at your children, you are creating more love in your family.
You are creating a safer place to live. A home where your children feel loved and accepted for who they are.
Be Gentle With Yourself as You Shift Away From Punishment
Please be gentle with yourself during this change. The world has been based on punishment since the beginning of time. Saying a threat such as “If you don’t ……”, is commonplace and feels “normal.”
Being part of the movement away from punishment and towards discipline can feel like an uphill battle. There are still many people who believe that shaming children and even spanking them is the way to get obedience.
There are many who don’t value the relationship with their children. They say, “it doesn’t matter what my kids want. It doesn’t matter what they think about me. I’m doing this for their own good.”
Why the Relationship With Your Child Matters
It does matter how your children feel about you. Even when you set a rule that they don’t like, such as, “You have to be home by 10 pm”, if they feel respected by you, the relationship will remain loving and connected.
My husband told me how Jen would complain to him about my rules. She would push back about cleaning the bathroom, but she never yelled at me nor called me names. Our relationship remained respectful and loving.
Three Parenting Areas That Build Trust and Respect
To keep the relationship respectful as you set rules and to build an atmosphere of openness and trust, there are 3 parenting areas that are important to find effective solutions for:
- How and when to confidently state rules and boundaries so that children respect and follow them with little pushback.
- How and when to discuss problems together so agreements are made and plans are successfully carried out.
- How and when to support a struggling child so they solve their challenges and develop self-esteem and resilience in the process.
Why the Discipline Parenting Approach Can Change the World
I believe that the disciplined parenting approach is how we will change the world from being adversarial with each other to being allies with each other.
Thank you for being on my Ally team on this journey of creating greater peace in our world. It starts in the home, and it’s already starting with you.
Happy parenting!
